CLINICAL BANTAMS WIN AT SOUTHEND

26 January 2021

City extended their unbeaten run to seven matches - with a clinical 3-1 victory at Southend United in Sky Bet League Two.

A Gareth Evans double and a first goal in claret and amber for Danny Rowe were enough to see off the Shrimpers at Roots Hall.

The Bantams came close in the 5th minute as Evans played the ball to Rowe, who cut inside and took aim from a tight angle - only to see Mark Oxley equal to it.

The Shrimpers had a penalty decision waved away as Simeon Akinola weaved his way into the 18-yard box before Anthony O’Connor went to ground.

The visitors came close again in the 19th minute as Levi Sutton angled goalward from inside of the box, however Oxley dived low and palmed it away for a City corner.

Minutes later, the Bantams had another corner after Rowe’s powerful effort was saved. Finn Cousin-Dawson rose highest to meet it, but his header was deflected over.

Mark Trueman and Conor Sellars’ side made the breakthrough in the 23rd minute, following a good spell of possession.

Billy Clarke played through Callum Cooke who had his shot saved by Oxley. Gareth Evans was on hand to follow in the rebound - striking in off the far post.

The hosts equalised in the 31st minute after Elvis Bwomono dispossessed Connor Wood inside the Bantams’ box and unleashed a low effort across goal which went in off Sam Hornby’s upright.

The visitors started the second half brightly and came within inches of re-taking the lead as Rowe turned away from his defender and struck a powerful effort against the Shrimpers’ crossbar.

Rowe had the hosts worried again as he unleashed a ferocious effort from 25 yards which looked to be heading into the top corner. Southend stopper Oxley managed to tip it around the post.

The Bantams struck for the second time in the 57th minute as the ball broke to Callum Cooke on the halfway line.

The midfielder drove forward before laying the ball off to Rowe, who slotted it into the bottom corner.

Southend responded with pressure and a couple of chances of their own, though the Bantams punished their hosts in the 74th minute, to wrap up all three points.

Cooke picked up the ball and again ran at goal before playing through Evans - who kept his cool and stuck it low past Oxley to send City back to West Yorkshire victorious.
